Astandoff and hostage situation at a maximum security wing of the Cook County Jail was resolved Thursday evening, according to the Cook County sheriff's office.
Two inmates had sabotaged security cameras and went into a standoff with officials after they took another inmate hostage late Thursday afternoon. The situation was resolved by a little before 8 p.m., according to the office, which did not immediately elaborate.
The two inmates took control of the area, which houses 16 other inmates in Division 10 of the jail, after they covered the floor with soapy water and obscured cameras in the area before ripping them out, according to a release from the sheriff's office.
One of the other inmates was held hostage by the two "with what appears to be a sharp object," according to the office.
The sheriff's Emergency Response Team had gone to the jail, and had been trying to "resolve the situation peacefully," according to the release. No one had been injured as of a little before 7 p.m.
